Learning to Love the Protein Shake

23471591_sIf you’re bariatric, you’re probably getting sick of the store-bought protein shake. The convenience of just opening a package and getting 20 or 30 grams of protein is great, yeah, but the taste leaves much to be desired.

The fact is, you can make a pretty darn good protein shake on your own, quickly and easily. All you need is a decent blender and some ingredients. Here’s how.

The standard guidance – at least in my program – for protein shakes for bariatric patients is, find one that’s under 200 calories that also provides at least 15 grams of protein.

This one goes over the calorie limit a bit, but it delivers a whopping 36 grams of protein, it tastes great, and it’s incredibly easy to make and enjoy. Sure, you could probably reduce the calories and carbs by substituting some other fruit – berries, fer instance – or some banana-flavored extract, but bananas are awesome. Plus, potassium.

And if you’ve got access to refrigeration when you get to work or wherever it is you’re going, this one travels pretty well, too.

  1. I tried a protein shake once that claimed it tasted like a chocolate milkshake. It lied. I never could bring myself to try one again, though I’ve wanted to many times. Fear of “ass taste” keeps me from it.
